This computing grid is optimized for parallel processing and large computational projects. This cluster is composed of 250 2Ghz PowerPC G5 processors, 2Gb of physical RAM allocated to each processor. The grid runs purely MacOS X (for the PowerPC processors). Sun GridEngine ® software is for distributed resource management system. All of the programs required for bioinformatics and statistical genetics are available on this system or can be installed per user request. All of these machines are secured behind a multi-headed firewall, which allows for encrypted communication only from the external network (using SSH). All extraneous services on the firewall machines are turned off, including email, file sharing, printing, etc., so that the machines are as secure as possible. The storage space available exceeds 3.5Tb. All data on the cluster are stored redundantly, using Apple ® Xsan&trade storage area network (SAN) software and Apple ® Xserve raid &trade storage arrays as the primary storage container, a second (off-site) SAN as an online backup container (with daily backups), and nightly tape backups as a tertiary precaution. One copy of backup tapes is also stored at an off-site location. All user accounts are password-restricted, and all data in individual users accounts is restricted so that only the individual user has access to the data. All inquiries and/or issues regarding the cluster should be directed to Human Genetics Systems Support Help Desk
