Research Summary: The major focus of my research is to use statistical genetic methods todetect, characterize, and locate genes that affect quantitative risk factorsof common human diseases. Using data on our large pedigreed baboon population,we are analyzing quantitative risk factors for atherosclerosis andhypertension (with Drs. David Rainwater and Laura Cox). We also are involvedin studies of the genetics of hypertension (with Dr. Larry Atwood) andosteoporosis (with Dr. Braxton Mitchell) using data on large Mexican Americanfamilies. With Dr. Paul Samollow, we are continuing development of geneticlinkage maps for Monodelphis domestica, a South American marsupial used instudies of atherosclerosis and skin cancer. In collaboration with Dr.Rainwater, we recently detected a gene in baboons that affects serumcholesterol levels of low density lipoprotein in response to increased dietarycholesterol.
