Human Genetics Journal Club Rules and Regulations
- HGJC begins promptly at 4:05 p.m. and ends promptly at 5:00 p.m. Libations are provided.
- The purpose of the HGJC is for informal presentation and discussion of interesting topics in Human Genetics.
- HGJC is now a REQUIRED class for all Human Genetics graduate students. Attendance is taken at all classes, and grades are based on attendance.
- Ph.D. students are required to register for at least 4 semesters of class, and to present at least twice during their time in the department.
- Masters students are required to register for at least 2 semesters of class, and to present at least once during the time in the department.
- Failure to attend more than 10% of classes (typically 2 lectures) will drop your final grade one letter grade.
- Intended absences are allowed for conflicting classes or other scholarly events. Please email your request for exemption to michael.barmada@hgen.pitt.edu.
- When presenting a journal article, one or at most two recent journal
articles are selected for discussion. The presenter gives a brief background
history (15-20 min), discusses the paper (15-20 min), and leaves 15-20
min free for open-ended discussion. Don't try to do too much - the discussion
is the best part - after all, the beverages are free. The
HGJC is not appropriate for comprehensive reviews.
- If you can not present at your designated time, it is your responsibility
(not Mike Barmada's) to find a replacement. Please note that you can usually
switch by taking an earlier time slot. Please DO NOT cancel at the last
minute as it is a tremendous hassle to notify attendees who travel to HGJC
from other buildings.
- Two weeks before your designated time, email information about your article(s) to Mike Barmada (michael.barmada@hgen.pitt.edu). Include in your email at least the authors, title, journal, and year.
- For further information, contact Mike Barmada by telephone at 412-383-7959, by fax at 412-624-3020, or (preferably) by email at michael.barmada@hgen.pitt.edu.
